Common Education Data Standards (CEDS) & CIID Partnership
CEDS and CIID as Key Partners
Although not officially under the same program, ScDU, CEDS, and CIID are designed to work together:
Provides the core data infrastructure.
Supplies the shared vocabulary and data model that systems like Generate use.
Specializes in IDEA reporting and provides ETL, validation, and reporting guidance.
Together, they form a complementary ecosystem—ScDU handles the infrastructure, CEDS ensures consistent data language, and CIID applies both to support IDEA data needs.
CEDS: Common Education Data Standards
What is CEDS?
The Common Education Data Standards (CEDS) is a national effort to standardize how education data is defined and used across systems. CEDS improves data quality and enables more effective data sharing between K–12, early childhood, postsecondary, and workforce systems.
The Challenge:
In the past, different education systems often used different terms for the same data. This made it difficult to share information, link systems, and produce accurate reports.
The Solution: CEDS
CEDS promotes a shared vocabulary for education data—like a dictionary ensuring consistent definitions for enrollment, attendance, course completion, and teacher credentials.
Key Benefits:
- Improved Data Quality: Reduces errors and ensures consistency across systems.
- Seamless Data Exchange: Enables accurate sharing across agencies.
- Simplified Reporting: Eases state and federal reporting burdens.
- Informed Decision-Making: Supports better data-driven decisions.

CIID: Center for the Integration of IDEA Data
What is CIID?
The Center for the Integration of IDEA Data (CIID) supports state education agencies (SEAs) in integrating special education data (IDEA) with general education data. CIID enhances IDEA reporting, compliance, and equity analysis.
The Challenge:
IDEA data is often siloed in separate special education systems, limiting the ability to view a student’s full academic picture or analyze outcomes.
The Solution: CIID
CIID provides tools and technical assistance to help SEAs integrate IDEA and general education data, often using CEDS to align and map information for improved reporting.
Key Benefits:
- Holistic Student View: Combines academic and special education data.
- Enhanced Analysis: Improves insights into outcomes for students with disabilities.
- More Efficient Reporting: Tools like Generate streamline IDEA reporting.
- Improved Compliance: Better integration supports IDEA monitoring requirements.
